Well that sucked..

What Happened:

November 26th, 2016 at 9am a very big problem became apparent with the infrastructure that runs this web forum.

What does this mean:

Everything was lost, including backups. Everything that could go wrong did, at the same time.

Luckily I still had some offsite backups from April 2016.

I had to rebuild the website from that backup along with some help from the Internet Way Back Machine.

How this affects you:

1) If you signed up after April 12, 2016 and before November 27th, then you are going to have to do it again. I will be validating accounts within hours instead of days.

2) If you posted something after April 12, 2016 and before November 27th then it is now gone.

What is next?

I am fairly confident things can be rebuilt around your communities quickly. Just post a message, go nuts.

For the last 13 years I have had this forum as a hobby and treated it as such. But this event suggests I need to handle it more like a business and put some more effort into it for maintenance.

So please turn off those ad blockers because it's those ads that help pay for this site to keep it going.

Hi Greg thanks for the update. Too bad about the data loss, but no big deal imo. The site has been stable and well performing for a long time so kudos for that.

Off to click some ads :)

Thank you for your work.... Greg is it? ... This forum has been a great resource.

Gnnerd00 2016-11-28 03:20 PM

Glad to see its back up and running. Thanks for all your hard work to get it back as best you could.

I've seen other sites with a PayPal "donate" button. Even if it's only $5 - $10 dollars here and there, it might add up better than ads do. I'm not saying ditch the ads, just that I know that they don't pay particularly well.

Just a thought.

The great thing is no one knows now that I hadn't posted for a week :)
Thanks again for all your efforts Greg, the site is well used, and a great resource for many people. Have a better week ahead!

thanks Greg - sorry to hear about the data loss.

when clicking ads for something I'm not interested in, should I keep the ad open for a period of time, or anything else to make sure it counts?

GregS 2016-11-29 05:00 PM

I don't think keeping it open for any period of time makes much of a difference as the counters are all handled using redirects through Google. But hitting multiple ads quickly will get flagged.

This is the media's fault! Sad!

Greg, so you run the entire "Building Homes" site? How did you come to start this? Thanks for all you do to keep it going!
