Yup. Not sure I'd call it horrendous as builders only do what is simplest and I can't blame them as they really don't know what a homeowner's going to want to do in their basement (if anything at all). It doesn't make sense to spend more on every house just in case a homeowner wants a clean look on their basement ceiling.

We ended up tearing back *all* of the duct work in the basement right back to the furnace and re-routed everything in order to get the clean look we wanted, but most people would have simply framed around it and saved $$$.
