Default Home audio: Rooms? placement? Ceiling/Wall? Speakers?

Hi,
We are going to be putting in ceiling speakers in the new home to
some extent, $419 by the builder, but are really green when it comes
to this kind of thing.

Were thinking about: Family, Kitchen, Living, and wires to outside for later.
All the wires would go to the family room near the TV/Media command
station. The only controls so far would be volume controls in Kitchen/Living.

I've only seen one other post about a 6-room NUVO system upgrade + spkrs,
is this what most people get or is this the Cadillac of these systems?

The controls they showed us for one model were really slick - digital lcd
control for your ipod, cd, etc but would be grande $$.

Ceiling speakers vs Wall speakers?
They were offering 10W speakers, is this enough?

What do you think?

Thanks

You might look into SONOS. There are a few dealers in Ottawa. I've had a look and I'm very, very impressed.

$419/pair of speakers and wires? What? Did Orbital charge me more because I'm with a different builder perhaps? It was $459/pair of 6.5" in ceiling speakers.

We added in ceiling in the loft, dining, kitchen, den, and pre-wire for the patio. I added another pair in the family room but it's for the 5.1 home theatre. MDW told me to loose the surround speakers so I put in a pair of ceiling as surrounds.

Think of your lifestyle when putting the speakers. If you spend a lot of time in your ensuite, then put a pair. For us, except at night, we would be in the kitchen, family room, den, or loft. Dining for entertaining. Nothing in living since we have the piano there.

As far as the controller/amps are concerned, I want a system that I can program and maintain on my own. This would probably eliminate Nuvo, speakercraft, crestron, russound, etc. I will be down probably to Sonos, squeezebox, or HTD

I have about anywhere from six to nine months to decide. I hope that there would be other choices by then. I'll probably use two of these for the amp. Let's hope the Canadian dollar gets even better vs. the US$ in the coming months.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.
