Question Carpet & Carpet Underpad

Hi guys, we are building our first home with Minto and would like some advice on the carpet and carpet underpad from those of you who already went through this or know more than we do about carpet.

Here are the options offered to us for the underpad:
  • 9mm 3.5lb chip foam (included)
  • 9mm 7lb chip foam
  • 3/8 inch Visco Pro underpad
Is it worth upgrading?
Does it really make the carpet last longer?
Does it feel that much different?
Can we get away with the included underpad if we go with berber carpet?
What underpad is best suited for each type of carpet?

Thanks a million!

Upgrade the underpad. It is absolutely worth it...we're at almost 7yrs with lots of life left in both berber and plush carpeted rooms.

I'm not sure what the included install was, but we just left a new build Minto home in August which we were in for 1.5 years. Our landlord didn't upgrade the carpet or under pad.

After about 6 months you could see the wear marks (more compaction) in the high traffic and impact areas like the landings for the stairs. Also, I'm surprised that there was any carpet left by the time we moved out. Every time we vacuumed, our Dyson would be plugged full of carpet fibers. When we did our final clean once all the furniture was out, I had to empty the Dyson after each room because of the "new" carpet that was under our furniture.

We're with a different builder and we upgraded both the carpet and the underpad. Was a relatively small price and it's made a huge difference in the feel and durability. With our builder, the upgraded carpet got you stain protection and a longer wear warranty. Having kids, we've already been able to test the stainguard built in to the carpet and it made clean up easy.
