Default Granite granite or upgraded kitchen carbinet

Just bought our pre-construction closing in July 2010, excited and started researching.

the builder gave us Granite counter-top as part of package, but from what i have been reading:
1. it is very easy to upgrade later ourself
2. you get more choices, better price and quality after closing
3. under mount sink will cost a arm and leg with builder counter-top

now this has made me thinking to switch from the granite to the taller kitchen cabinet? what do you guys think? what do i need to watch out for the cabinet upgrade?

PS: our kitche size is 10'0x9'6

Do you have 9ft ceilings? If yes, definitely go for taller uppers. As for 1,2,3, that would be yes, yes, and oh yes. I was quoted $2800 for a sink I have seen in retail stores for $1100. If they will credit you the granite and let you use that money for something else I would consider it. But in my experience I don't think they will be that accommodating. Good luck with it though. Btw, it's not a huge kitchen so an upgrade shouldn't be outrageous, unless you go top of the line. But you may be surprised, from what we saw at our decor centre there were a couple of decent cabinet colour/style combos in the standard selection.

Wow that's crazy! The upgrade to an under mount sink was $900.00

Taller uppers usually don't cost as much as granite. I would see if you could get a credit for the granite, and reuse it in the design centre.

I would upgrade your cabinets instead and do the granite after as its an easy change after close and its much cheaper.

I agree with LisaC. Do the uppers. Granite can be done after and for usually the price the builder is quoting you, you can get something better after closing. Under mount sink are way to over price with the builder. Go shop around and you will see that you can get it at better deal.
