![]() They put baseboard on the riser between the two levels. ![]() I think it should have been tile as well. The baseboard just doesn't look right there and it will look worse after its painted white and gets a few toe kick marks. Has anyone else seen this on your house? Is it a standard way of doing it?

I believe I will have the same setup in my entrance. If that is the way it's done perhaps we can redo with tile after?.... ask for a few tiles..or where to buy?
I am not familiar with this setup and would like to hear from others. Perhaps a call to dorothy could have this changed?

Is it a sunken foyer with 1 step up to the main floor? If so I had that in my last house and the riser is covered with drywall and finished with baseboard. It looks fine. I wouldn't want tile on the riser, I think that would look weird because the tile would be vertical.

I am not certain, but I paid for oak stairs for my main staircase, and that gave me wood stairs to the landing to the basement(not all the way down, just to the landing...3 steps), and also a wood step down to the door to garage. I would ask if they can at least make it wood for a price. Tile would be Ok too. I see your point about a couple of kicks.

We have the sunken foyer as well, but we never thought about what would be on the riser. We're ok with the baseboard. Not sure about the tile idea as it would look ok of place in our opinion.... it would be more durable however. We'll have to keep an eye out for how it's done.

What Mark & Lynda described is exactly what we have.
It looks strange now with all the different surfaces in the one small location. It might look better after its painted and all finished. We will have to wait and see. Thanks for all of you opinions! J.

One thing I forgot to mention. There may be an oak nosing on the top of the riser. That gives it a finished look.
