Default Water Quality / Softener

Hi,

Can some Phase 1 homeowners share their water hardness reports before softeners went in?

Any tips on what water softener, iron removal, carbon filter setups are working well? Where'd you buy them, and what model and price?

Is anyone having success without a water softener?

Thanks!

Hi 4roos,
I am one of the Phase 1 owners. Welcome to Fieldstone community!
The water source of our community is Island Lake of Orangeville. The average hardness prior to water softener is 12.6 (the information from Orangeville Water Processing Plant). After we moved in, the water softener company came and did the test on site, the reading was 15. So it's mildly hard water and a softener is recommended.

Thanks for the welcome Hawk!

I just spoke with Rod Sutherland of The Water Specialists in Hockley Valley.
www.thewaterspecialists.com
519-940-2708

He said a 32k grain Viqua system with Clack electronic control valve, installed, would be $1950, including running of bypass lines for outside taps and sink tap if we wanted it.

Does anyone have experience with these guys?

Any alternative companies and prices to consider?

Does the water straight from the well taste good, or should I be getting a RO system and running the softened water through the RO to drink?

hello...initially we decided to rent a water softener from CXXXXX large company in Canada...I do not recommend..the rental equipment is ancient technology, the unit is at least a decade old given the sticker inside...it broke down after 7 months...we pulled it out in month 10, paid the balance of the 12 month contract...just purchased a new softener high level technology from EliteWaterandAir...a one man operation, less overhead that way, 60 yrs old, been in the industry for a long time...knows his stuff, just over $1000 installed and taxes in..just used him today on the cottage for more work..highly recommend Joe 877 335 4830 from Mt Forest area..he does all water treatments eg reverse osmosis they have a website no fly by night operation...we had a wonderful water fella in previous house in caledon...but Elite prices are much better

You could try to get a quote for comparison from Nimbus too: 416-398-2028 http://www.nimbuswatersystems.com/, which Brookfield uses. The quote you have now does seem a bit high (also, it's probably Fleck brand of control valve instead of Flack).

My experience is that there is no need for a RO system. But everyone has the different opinion on the taste, so it depends.

i agree on reverse osmosis.. could do fine with out it....i just bought cottage with one in it...first one i have ever had...$385 for new membrane, 3 filters, service call because i needed to be educated on how it works and could not open it myself...the membrane was 99 plus tax...so these systems can cost some money each year

My reading suggests Clack WS1 is the best basic valve because of its design. It's a piston design that's supposedly based on the Fleck piston design, but improved. Fleck and Autotrol have decent reputation for their piston designs too. Ecowater makes a disc design that's used in theirs and the cheaper big box store models. I wonder if buying an Ecowater system is really buying a good warranty on a mediocre product.

Has anyone had good or bad experiences with Water Maker in Orangeville? They sell Ecowater but can also get systems with Fleck and Clack valves. They're pricing something out with Clack WS1 for me now...

I've arranged a whole-house water softener group buy with Michael at Water Maker Orangeville. Quote offer code "Michael WS1". Michael has many different options for water treatment but the two below are the ones I've arranged promotional pricing for us on:

System WS1:
$1400 including install and taxes.
32k grain softener
All North American construction.
Clack WS1 electronic metered valve. The best residential valve on the market for more than a decade of no-maintenance operation.
Includes any necessary plumbing or bypass within 15 ft of the softener such as hard water bypass to backyard.

System WS1 with chlorine removal:
$1650 including install and taxes.
Same as above, with added 16k carbon block for chlorine removal.

I'm going for the WS1 with chlorine removal. For additional charge I'm also going to get them to run hard water to an additional faucet at the sink and to the fridge for ice maker, and put an in-line carbon filter in the basement to remove chlorine but keep the minerals in these two lines.
