Quoted us $1500 to stain the stairs to upstairs. So far good communication and very professional.

He also specializes in capping builder's basement stairs with hardwood.

Was the pricing cheaper than going with the builders for staining?

With the builder it was free for unfinished or finished "natural" colour. All other stain colours were around $4k extra. Like buying soda and popcorn at the movie theatre, you know you want it, but boy does it sting...

Loretto is staining our stairs now and so far it's looking great. He prefers to work before people move in, since it takes several trips to do the fill and sand, stain, and clear coating. The stairs are a no-go zone for 3 days or so once the staining starts.

We forgot to tell him about an oak landing area half-way up the stairs, and another strip of oak trim between kitchen and mud room. So we agreed on $250 extra on top of the original $1500. He sure is worth the money, let me tell you. The prep work (filling and sanding) alone took two nights. The builder's oak is a bit mediocre so he had to fix a bunch of areas and even take part of the railing apart to be able to sand everything properly. Fortunately he also installs oak railings so he knows what he's doing there.
