Default Custom control element on stove

Hi - does anyone know how a 'custom control' element works? I have a new Jenn-Air slide-in range (smooth-top) and there is a custom control element at the front which has 2 sizes - basically an inner element and an outer one - and I can't find info in the manual or online about how to use it. Before I call Jenn-Air, does anyone know?

I assumed it could 'read' the size of the pot and choose which element (inner or outer size) to use but I turned in on with a small pot and only the outer bigger element turned on...can't seem to get only the smaller element to turn on (no controls on knobs for it)...thanks in advance!
