Energy Star Certificate...does it do anything?

...or is it just an official acknowledgment that our home is Energy Star Qualified (ie., toss it in a folder and likely never need it again).

It's useful if your mortgage is insured by CMHC... They give rebates for Energy Star homes, and they need a copy of the certificate to authenticate.

What a bust! Since we didn't use CMHC as we had more than 20% down, we don't get diddly squat?

You are saving $$ everyday because of that certificate. I wouldn't say that you got diddly squat.

While this has improved, there was a time when one very major builders insulation installers where chronically shorting many attics. I often wondered how these so called energy star homes got that certification when they obviously did not qualify. One energy star guy told me he just checked the occasional attic.

This is also one reason why people lose money when they sell their newer home. Insulation shortages often result in a discount on the resale price of the home.
