We ordered our fireplace stone on Saturday. We are going with the Canyon Stone Quartzite Stone Ledge. We shopped around and found prices from $6.99 - $10.99 a square foot.

Fab Tile Co. installed mine - stone was from
Emerald Tile. I chose Canyon Stone because it had the twinkle I was looking for (the same product foxborough listed above). I didn't like the RealStone look, but it's personal preference. It was completed in one day.

We've done a Cultured Stone fireplace in our last two houses. Just did our new house post-possession a couple of weeks ago. Cultured Stone is more weighty and stone-like (but still man-made) - we preferred it to the thin veneer stuff. It does have to be installed with proper cement rather than being glued to the wall but we love the more substantial finish. Used Merkley to source it both times.

If you're interested the guy I use is awesome and is a proper stone contractor - spends most of his time doing external stone vaneer work etc. PM me your number and I'll pass it on. Can also send you some photos.

Richyrich's comment made me think. I really don't want to buy a stone that will require any kind of "ripping out drywall" and etc! I was under the impression that for 9' wall, you can just glue on top of the drywall directly. Now, I know having a nice cement or plywood is obviously better than drywall, but it is really necessary?

Came across this "ledgestone" on sale at Rona: http://www.rona.ca/en/ledgestone-wall-slate

Works out to $3.79/sq. ft. 3 colour styles to choose from. Seems like a pretty good deal.

Can anyone comment on "ledgestone"?

this will be specific product dependant - best advice is to check manufacturer install instructions to be certain
