is this an example of an in-wall speaker that can be used as a vapor barrier?

Cut out the hole for the speaker. You will be cutting the vapour barrier, so no saving that.
You will either need to peel out a layer of insulation or compress it as best as possible so the speaker can physically fit. Get some 6mil plastic and fit it in the hole so that it can fit the depth. Peel the existing vapour from around the inside of the hole, it's between the drywall and the insulation and then tape it to the new plastic you just put in. Use 3M Tuck Tape, the red stuff. Put your speaker in place and enjoy. How to get the wire in place is a whole other lesson.

thanks for the reply Greg, but I don't quite understand. if I were to cut out a 8x10" rectangle out of my wall, wouldn't I cut out an 8x10" piece of the vapor barrier? then can't I just use that red tape and tape it back into place?

You will need a piece about 4 inches bigger both dimensions - to allow for the depth of the speaker and some overlap to make taping easier.

is it important to take out some insulation or can I just push in the speaker and compress the insulation?

Greg, when a company wires a home, do they generally fasten cables to wall studs? I'm asking because the speaker wire on one end of the room is too short and will be to long on the other side of the room. So if I ever install the rear in-wall speakers, I can go to the basement and pull the wire more towards the side that's too short, if you understand what i'm saying.
