Default Furnace/Hot water tank location

Is there any requirement not to install the furnace and hot water tank in a low ceiling (7') area? Does anybody have experience with builder altering the floor plan significantly?

Was the location spelled out in your purchase agreement? That is what it will fall back to.

Yes and no. There's a floor plan we initialed with the contract (and that's one we saw), but then there's the "subject to change" clause (there's legal precedence it may not hold up in court in our case).

Legal option is always the last resort, so I'm looking for people's experience of effective ways to deal with their builders.

The furnace can be in the garage, attic or a crawl space for that matter. If you don't like the location for some reason you'll have to work it out with your builder. Let them know what will make you happy. They'll let you know if that can be accomodated. Unless you specifically selected the location I don't know of any way to force the issue.
