Default Is this window water leaking or just damaged by excessive condensation?

Hey guys, I am new here, hope this is the right community to ask this question in
Should it be a big concern?

Is this your first winter? It's just the wood shrinking due to the colder air.

Nope. My house is about 6 years old. I never noticed this until this winter.
it was behind a curtain. You can see there is obviously water damage there
on the window's frame.

could be either.

you can test in the spring with a hose.

for now, leave the curtains open for better circulation.

It could be just the lack of humidity. You can caulk it for now. Also verify that your house's humidity is reasonable. The last couple days have been quite brutal; even with a bypass central humidifier, my house drops down to below 35%.

If you avoid running humidifier in winter, humidity should settle around 33-37 RH range. This will greatly reduce condensation and sometimes puddling from said condensation. The trade off is fairly dry air, skin, etc. A bit of a balancing act.

But try turning off the humidifier as first step, you will be shocked how much of an (almost) immediate difference there is in terms of window bleeding.

Looks like the trim shrank. This is not uncommon. The best solution is to either ignore it or to neatly fill the gap with a white interior paintable caulk called DAP.
