the main router will be in the basement, and the closet AP will just be an wireless AP. I want to wire it because well I think its cleaner option and don't want to use PoE.

I use to have my wireless router in the basement and signal was slow in some parts of the house. Recently, I added another wireless router in the second floor connecting to one of the existing Cat5e outlets. Turned off the wi-fi for the one in the basement (now just acting as a hub) and turned on the one in the loft. Much better connection from anywhere in the house (even in the basement).

Hence, I'd suggest doing the same, move your wi-fi to the second floor using one of the bedroom jacks. You may have to try which one of the three works best.
