Default Duct Work Cut-out

We have a 4-year old Tamarack home. I was in my basement the other day and noticed a large cut-out in my duct work. is this normal? the cut out is about 12"x12" square.

I've attached 2 pictures. 1 showing the area of the cut-out in relation to the furnace, and 1 as a closeup.

fwiw I've never seen anything like that .... no idea what it might be. But its certainly not normal to have holes in the plenum.

Have you noticed any air coming out when the furnace is on?

i put my hand up there the other night, but sure if furnace was on. but there appeared to be a small airflow coming "from" the furnace.

i will check again tonight when i know the furnace is ON and see what i find.

the strange thing is that we have been in the house 4 years. the only work we had done on the HVAC was on move-in, we had the following installed by the same company that the builder uses (Harding):
-humidifyer
-make-up air
-A/C

since they were installed, we had our 1-year inspection with an inspector.

Have you had the ducts cleaned recently? It looks big for something like that but there was a piece screwed over the opening and then taped. Cleaning company may have used that for the vacuum but never sealed it up... Guesses???

haven't had any work done on ducts or furnace since we moved in and had the things mentioned installed.

the 2 circles are other connections coming in on the other side. ignore them, they are deceiving in the picture.

will be checking tonight for air.

That is really odd to have such a large opening and an inspector missing that and also you for not seeing it for the last few years but you've seen it now which is good.
I did see the post of the things you had done after close but there was once a panel covering the opening hence the question about duct cleaning - someone had to remove the piece that was there at one point and your guess is as good as mine. For whatever reason it may have been the Harding people that did your work and just forgot to cover it back up somehow.
Do you ever remember seeing a piece of aluminum that size and wonder why??? If not I'd go to HD (or the like) and buy a piece of metal, some metal screws & aluminum tape to cover the hole and seal it up soon. You're loosing a lot of heat and AC with that to your basement...

lol my eyes and brain were telling me the two openings were on the side of the plenum facing the camera - too funny

you indeed have need of a sheet metal plate to simply cover the hole - you can see the original screw holes on all 4 sides

lowes sells metal for cold air return bottoms between joists - 5 ft is $6 … they may have smaller sizes
