Greg, can you identify this old Telecom equipment?

We bought an old house (4 level backsplit, huge house on 2/3 acres) and when going through it I saw some interesting stuff. I saw a Nortel 3x8 KSU but also what appears to be a KSU from a PBX - an old one.

At the panel, I found:
Punchdown/screwdown panels

Some sort of box!
Nortel Frequency Generator

Wow that is some old stuff in and old house. I can tell the age of the house is at least 30+ years based on the flat black cable in one of the pictures. This is most likely a service entrance cable.

The system you mentioned is a 3x6, so 3 incoming lines across 6 extensions.

You have a BIX punchdown block in the first picture. Kinda like a patch panel. Still used these days, but not as much.

The picture next to it looks like an old demarc panel.

The 'some sort of box!' probably has a 66-block inside of it. The older version of a BIX.

The frequency generator I can only speculate on.. most likely to generate a dialtone or similiar to all the extensions.

Two cardslots for expansion.

PSU and other stuff.

The big cable end would have plugged into a KSU
or similar device elsewhere.

Does any of this work? Did they leave any sets for you?

The deal isn't closing until July, so I won't know if it works until then It's an estate sale, and the family said they may leave behind anything they don't want - there were no phones to go with it, but I'm guessing that this will stay though :P

Deal closed Friday, I went yesterday and discovered a few things:

1) They left the phone systems :P Both this old one and the one that I saw. My decision now is: Do I keep the existing system(s), or sell them and put in a computer with Asterisk. (Or keep them and put in Asterisk)
2) A/C is from 41 years ago, probably when the house was built.
3) Hot water tank is an electric RENTAL from 20 YEARS AGO. (Probably gonna switch to Gas Tankless)

I just picked up a bunch of TalkSwitch equipment yesterday to install in my house for demo. I looked at Asterix, but I am looking for a very turnkey solution for non-technical clients.


Any AC that you replace it with will probably run at half the cost for electricity.
