...add to that the small Jockvale bridge is getting shutdown for several months over the summer to reinforce it knowing that the GB realignment isn't coming anytime soon so they need to spend more $ beefing up areas that will have to serve the community much longer than anticipated.

Anyone following Jan Harder or Barrhaven in general? She recently posted a couple important things on her lately in regards to Barrhaven.

1. Wanting to build a "downtown" Barrhaven around Marketplace with a future LRT spot.
2. Approval for widening Greenbank Rd. as been approved and scheduled for 2020.

Thoughts?

It's all over the BH social media feeds. Jan Harder mainly.

A few thoughts:

BH really needs a DT....a walkable space where people can gather, I'm 100% for it.

But as you can imagine most people's automatic reaction lately is to meet ANY BH development plans with skepticism given the state of the road infrastructure - can't blame them!

About the GB widening.....it's unclear whether they mean existing GB or the planned realignment. GB realignment is currently acting as a MAJOR bottleneck for the maturation of all of BH South. Very badly needed, for too many reasons to list. Some obvious, some less so.

Oh and the LRT is a pipe dream. They are talking about Environmental Assessments etc, but in reality we won't be seeing it all the way out to BH in our lifetime.

"As well on Wednesday City Council supported a motion to move $34 million dollars forward in 2020 to complete the design for the Greenbank Road re-alignment from Chapman Mills to Barnsdale. Included in the funding is money to purchase land that we will need along the corridor. This section was to start receiving implementation funding only in 2026. The project design includes a new four-lane road with two median lanes for rapid transit as well as a new bridge crossing the Jock River. I want to thank my colleagues for understanding and supporting this incredibly important project. It may not sound exciting but we can’t build any road without an environmental assessment and design. Now it will be my goal to figure out a way to pay for the building of the road. Stay tuned…."

No talk about the new Amazon facility opening up here next spring?

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canad...en/ar-BB169Idb

E-commerce giant Amazon announced it’s planning to open a second “fulfillment centre” in Ottawa, this time a 450,000-square-foot warehouse at Citigate in Barrhaven.

The company says the warehouse will create more than 1,000 full-time jobs.

Employees at the centre will “work alongside Amazon robotics to pick, pack and ship small items to customers such as books, electronics and toys.”

Slated to open in 2021, it will be Amazon’s eighth facility in Ontario and the company’s 14th fulfillment centre in Canada, the company said in a press release Monday.

Amazon first local warehouse, almost a million square feet on Boundary Road in Carlsbad Springs, opened last year.

The Barrhaven project will be built by construction firm Broccolini.

So who’s occupying the other 2.3 million sq ft? Or was that an error? Check out this article below, they were explaining that it was a much larger development (2.7 million sq ft).

Is this part of that? Seemingly a very small part? 😳😃

My understanding is that the 450,000sq ft building is Phase 1.

I am honestly shocked by the entire thing! They have advertised that area as a "Corporate Park" - corporate and industrial are two very different things. And shame on the city councillors that approved this zoning when so much of Barrhaven's future residential expansion was already known at the time these plans were submitted. We're talking about 32 semi trucks per hour coming off at Fallowfield, making a hard right at Tomlinson and then navigating a tiny roundabout to get to their building. Not to mention the 1700+ car trips on AM peak alone into that area, and another 1500+ for the PM shift workers...many of those people will exit the building through the roundabout/lights shared with the shopping centre. (For reference, this is all from their transportation assessment documents) I can't even imagine what this is going to look like when the business-day commute gets back to normal. Anyone in Barrhaven who thinks this is "great for jobs" and "great for the community" doesn't know Amazon's reputation as an employer, doesn't understand that the $15/hr workers can't afford to live here and have no concept of what this will mean for driving to and through this West part of the burb.

...And as someone who lives within eyeshot of this thing, I am appalled that the communities most affected by the incredible increase in sound and congestion on our closest roads were not made more aware of this...but, at the same time, if they keep us all in the dark until they break ground, all we can do is complain.

Sarah2012, that is a great write up expressing my concerns as well. Is there anything we can do at this point? The infrastructure is an issue at its current state.. adding this facility will make it much worse. How can the Councillors drop this news to us all of a sudden, with an opening date of 2021 without any public consultation?
