Default Kitchen - Painted MDF vs. Thermofoil?

We're currently struggling trying to decide whether to get painted MDF (~$3000) vs. thermofoil (~$900) for our very likely grey kitchen cabinets.

Although the inter web is full of blogs on this, I thought I'd see if this forum had any experience and opinions.

Thank you in advance!

MDF chips, swells, and paint doesn't do well on it. Theromfoil has a vacuum-like heatedseal on it.

Thermfoil is more easily cleaned, do better with heat and moisture, and are cheaper.

However, I would always go with wood, if it's an option.

Always go wood. Thermafoil plastic is junk unless you like the peeled look (currently replacing and trying to match cabinet doors in my rental unit). Kinda like comparing solid surface counters to laminate. When I picked my finishes last time, I was surprised that the look of the door (glossy 'modern') cost more than a better material.

Wood is always best but for your choice then I would think MDF would be much better than Thermofoil which is after all just a thin layer of vinyl over a MDF cabinet or cabinet door.

If needed, MDF can be repainted or touched up.

Go with painted MDF.

I have thermafoil cabinets in our ensuite washroom and my parents have a thermafoil kitchen.

The doors peel if exposed to heat or water or just peel as the glue dries out. You can re-glue the foil back (white carpenters glue) if there is no damage but that's not always the case.

These guys make the Thermafoil doors if you need to order new or replacements.

I just purchased and received 2 doors from them for a laundry room cabinet.

We got thermafoil white cabinets in our kitchen and washrooms. I’ve had them for almost a year now with no issues. Very easy to maintain/clean.

I would take MDF over thermafoil if you actually cook in your kitchen. We used thermafoil only for the washrooms. In our kitchen, we paid extra to do painted Maple.
