Turns out they called me the next day - PDI is Tuesday - still only 2 days before closing. They aren't even ready - I peeked inside today, and there is garbage everywhere! good luck doing all that work on Monday! We'll see how it goes....

Here is a list of things to look for during your PDI. It covers most of the important items. You don't have to look for all of those items (for example I didn't care about bulbs wattage, because I was replacing all bulbs with CFLs anyway, etc), but just pick things that you think are important to you once you move in - remember you will only have around 1-1.5 hours for your PDI, so don't focus on small details too much

EDIT: Take a small night light with you (or something similar) for testing all electrical outlets.

KITCHEN
check hot/cold water
chips in porcelain sinks or scratches on counter tops?
cabinets and appliances are level and properly anchored to the wall or secured to the countertops, that all doors and drawers open fully and without binding
The space allotted for your appliances should be correct
check all the electric outlets. Do they work? Do they fit?
check dishwasher rough-in, water supply and drain
all phone outlets?
damage to floors or walls?
all drains?
all lights work?
all taps
all doors and door stops behind all doors?
all locks?
cracks in paint or drywall?
correct-wattage bulbs
fans?
BATHROOMS
check hot/cold water
flush all toilets
check all the electric outlets. Do they work? Do they fit?
chips in porcelain sinks or scratches on counter tops?
look for scratches and nicks in the sink as well as the shower enclosure and tub.
check that the sink and tub stoppers hold water, and that the shower strainer is fastened securely
damage to floors or walls?
all drains?
all lights work?
all taps
all doors and door stops behind all doors?
all locks?
fans?
cracks in paint or drywall?
all doors. Make sure all six sides are painted – front, back, top, bottom and both ends
hinges should be free of paint
correct-wattage bulbs.
Check for bathroom accessories (towel bar, toilet paper holder, soap holder in bath tub or shower)
LIVING/DINING ROOM
all phone outlets?
damage to floors or walls?
all lights work?
cracks in paint or drywall?
stains on carpet?
all doors. Make sure all six sides are painted – front, back, top, bottom and both ends
hinges should be free of paint
correct wattage bulbs
walk all carpeted areas, checking for loose fits at the edges, ripples in the middle and squeaks in the subfloor

It went well I guess....a few minor issues. We got our keys today and they STILL haven't finished varnishing our staircase. But, other than that, looks pretty good! Now comes all the hard work of putting a new house in working order!

That's why you shouldn't go there before closing - it's better not to know
But seriously, I heard this happened to many houses in the area. Let's just hope that they will finish all the construction here soon, so this kind of things will stop happening...
