Default Adding Extra Windows & Doors - Builder or DIY??

We're just in the early stages of designing our new place and wondered if anyone out there who built a Tartan added any exterior doors or windows. We're looking at putting in a door through the mudroom to the side of the house and adding a few windows to the Living Room and upstairs loft area.

Some of the prices have come back fairly steep...considering the amount of labour that would have to go into adding them when you're working from the framing stage. I've put in a windows and doors in older houses, but I'm wondering if any of you have waited until after moving in to add these features.

To give you an idea of what we're talking about, a standard exterior door was quoted around $3,000 (but they weren't sure yet) and adding a standard size window about $1,800.

Might be a hassle to do afterwards, but I know I can do it for less down the road.

Thoughts?

Keep in mind that there are rules and regulations about windows (and possibly doors) on the side of your house. If you are installing windows on the side of your home make sure to get your permits before buying your windows to ensure that you are permitted to put the windows where you want.

And if it's on the side of the house (load bearing wall), structural integrity may be affected so you'll nee plans, a building permit.. all that to save 5k?

True enough on all fronts... We're just in the midst of upgrade heaven/hell...heaven when you list of the things that will make your new home beautiful, then slashing to bring you back to budget.

We'll definitely be trying to add all upgrades that will require permits later on...such as having the builder run all the basement electrical now rather than later when we'd have to get permits.

Thanks for the thoughts!

All basement electrical now? Forget that, the permit for that is only 80$ and they won't run it in the interior walls that are not there yet..
