Question West or East

Through tips and suggestions from this site I have located new home options in the East and the West that interest me.

Locations would be Embrun (East) or Almonte (West) commuting to the centre of the city each way each day by car (already have parking) work hours are not affected by rush hour so no traffic issues.

The distance point to point is less than 2 km difference in either direction

Any feeback on which commute is the optimal choice ?

Thanks
Zarfman

I personally prefer to live in the West as there is more stuff to do and places to go (Scotiabank, new Tanger outlet, new Barrhaven waterpark etc)

Although who knows if there will be less traffic from the East as more DND employees want to relocate to the West to be closer to new HQ on Moodie?

We lived in Embrun until a few months ago (actually in between Embrun and Casselman). I would say that the drive from the East is much quicker than from the West....a lot less traffic. It would take us 20 minutes to the split (St. Laurent). That's where the traffic would slow down during rush hour, but the 417 East would flow nicely. Especially going home, it would open up right at the split while 174 for example was bumper to bumper (and 417 West to Kanata).

Maybe one thing to consider is how your commute would be during a major snow storm. Embrun looks to be closer to the 417, so maybe the commute would be better.

One thing that would bother me driving in from the west to down town is the sun. You head downtown and the sun is in your eyes and heading home, the sun is in your eyes again.

Came here to post exactly this! It has always driven me nuts that the sun is constantly in your eyes during that commute. It's one thing I really like about living in the East and commuting westward.

Currently living in Russell which is the english-based community beside Embrun (primarily French)...We used to live in Riverside South and much prefer the commute from Russell. If you can leave early (around 7) you don't hit much traffic at the split.

Also, I think Russell/Embrun would be more value for your money than Almonte.

Was out in almonte a week ago. Lots of newer commercial development right in the village. No reason not to go there.

Maybe 10 minutes to Carleton Place with lots of stores there too.
