That's a ground wire. The black pipe is your gas line. It doesn't make noise and it wouldn't be vibrating.

Sounds like the noise is from your furnace. Check if the noise is coming from inside your furnace. It's either noise from duct work expansion and contraction OR it's from your furnace ventor motor. The ventor motor fan blades are all plastic and wear out (melt) over time. I had one go bad and expect it to happen again.

The noise is coming from a part of the basement that is finished. We'd have to cut open part of the ceiling to fix it.
I don't know the exact spot, just the area. And if we cut the ceiling open, who know what we'll cut along with it. So we'll just live with it. Does the AC use the same ducts in the summer?

Noise in your ducting can also travel so it may not be coming from where you think it is.

The AC uses the same ducting but the cooling doesn't usually cause as many noises.

the sound mysteriously hasn't happened in the last two days. when it happens again, I should record it and post it, if this site allows posting of videos.

It's been warmer. Maybe your heat isn't on as much. If you have a two stage furnace maybe it isn't getting to the second stage so the ducts aren't getting as hot.
