ticking noise

It's been too long so I don't remember what it sounded like exactly but when I first moved in, I had a ticking noise as well in the corner of my basement. It started off slowly and then it became constant.

It ended up being the gas meter on the other side of the wall. The dials had seized up and the ticking was it trying to turn the dials. The gas company replaced the entire meter.

Thanks for letting me know. So the sound was originating outside and travelling along a pipe and sounded like it was coming from inside? I'll have to look at my meter, but i think its digital.

Is the noise really that loud?

Well it depends on how loud you have your volume when hearing it. But ya its pretty loud. I can hear it 2 floors up while I'm sleeping.

it will go for a period of time when its making the noise, then stop for a period of time, then start again for a period of time. But each time it starts again, it does it at the same interval. just now it was doing it every 30 seconds. before that every 15 seconds.

I went outside during this ticking noise but heard nothing from the gas meter. but there are no dials on it anyways.

Is there anything on the other side of that wall?

yes, the gas meter, some other meter, a telephone box, something to do with Rogers. But none of those things are making any noise.

ok I found the source of the sound. its coming from one of the white PVC pipes coming out of the furnace. if I move the pipe where its entering the ceiling, I can reproduce the sound. I have circled the pipe in red in the pictures. anyone know what this pipe is for? It may be the pipes that lead to the outside. so could it be some kind of exhaust or intake?

Do you still have the manual for your furnace? It should tell you if it's the intake our outtake.
