Default Dual zone climate

Has anyone done dual zone climate control through the builder? Ive heard that putting a separate thermostat in the basement is a good idea as it can kick extra heat in when needed.

Was it expensive? Even a option?

A lower level gas fireplace on a thermostat works very well for this.

Sprayfoam insulation in the basement is the way to go. even in winter, my basement vents are almost fully shut.
