Default Staining stairs

Can anyone tell me what's involved in staining stairs if they are carpeted? Obviously the carpet has to be removed, however what needs to be done to stain the stairs? And can anyone recommend someone who does this?
thanks.

hi 3rdhome, what kind of wood is under the carpet?

Assuming the wood underneath is suitable for staining, you need to sand everything down using fine grit paper (approx 220 grit), then stain it.
Apply the stain, going with the grain, using a lint-free cloth and let it sit for about 5-10 min, then wipe of excess with a dry cloth. Let stain fully dry for 1-2 days.

After stain dries, you need to seal it. Depending on how glossy you want the finish to be will determine how many coats of varathane you will have to apply. It is important to remember that you must lightly sand between each coat with a very/extra fine paper (over 300 grit). 2 coats should be fine.

We were quoted over $1200 for someone to come in and do it for us, so we decided to do it ourselves. IMO it's not that difficult, and you can save a ton of money. You just need the time and patience.

If you don't have natural wood under the carpet, companies like this can help you.
