Resurrecting this thread.

Has anyone tried using a Mac Mini to stream media content from their network to the TV? ie. use the Mac mini in place of a Media box like the WD live or Boxee Box. connected directly to the TV via HDMI.

I currently have the WD TV live media player but I hate the fact that I cannot steam directly from the internet. I heard from a couple of people that the Mac Mini does a very good job at this and the fact that it's a full blown Mac is an added bonus.

That was a popular option several years ago, but the AppleTV kinda killed that since it's a fraction of the price that a Mac Mini was.

But with Apple TV aren't you restricted to watching movies and TV from the itunes store vs streaming TV shows from CTV or CBC for example?

You can also do Netflix with it. Dunno about streaming your own digital media from somewhere on your local network.

Jailbreak the AppleTV 2 and put XBMC on it. Once you use this setup you'll never be able to use something else. The metadata scraping, media database and ease of use it second to none!

Another new option is the Pivos Aios Media Player:

I don't think it supports Netflix or XBMC yet, and I heard it's very buggy right now, but they are releasing updates pretty frequently. The price seems good for what you get. Especially the HD slot and USB3.0.

Have you done this then, and do you have screenshots to show how well it's working

Can you browser the web after this patch?

Yes, I'm running two AppleTV 2s running XBMC and I have it on a PC too. It's great being able to share the database of my movies, TV shows and music among all 3 devices. I can start watching a movie on one device, stop playing and go to another and resume from where I left off.

Why do I need to provide you with screenshots of it running? Do you think I'm lying about it? Do I have anything to gain from that?

No idea, sorry. Can't say I've really found a need to either as I would rather use a latop/iPad and still be able to watch TV.
