Default Financial Advisors?

First, have most people here used a financial advisor before going into purchasing their first home? And if so can you tell me what group you went through, and how they were with helping you out?

Do most people go through the financial advisors available at their bank? I am with RBC, and I am sure could have someone there walk me through all I need to know, however I have a strong feeling that they are probably not going to be the ones I use for a mortgage as I can get some better rates in other areas. So do most people set themselves up with an advisor at the bank they think the will use for their mortgage? OR independent financial advisors?

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can provide. Much appreciated.

Just a note...I know this may better fit other areas of the forum, but I was hoping for answers from Ottawa residents specifically, as I figured information on independent financial advisors from them would be more applicable to me. Thanks.

Hmm.. why would you use one to buy a house? Just curious.

I know one... he's pretty good so far (I switched with him 6 months ago, he's much better than my previous one). Let me know if you want his contact info.

Well, I would like to speak to someone on the fine details of the RRSP Home Buyers Plan and the steps I have to make sure I meet to make it happen. I would like to have money pulled out to assist in my down payment, but would like some more details from someone qualified to advise me on some steps I will take.

I donít think I want to go through my bank on such a discussion because like I mentioned, I donít think I will be using them for my mortgage. If you want to PM me the contact info, that would be great. Thanks Mart.
