Default Basment wall insulation - maximizing space

Any thoughts as to the most efficient way to insulate basement walls with respect to saving space?

I have been calling around about spray foaming, and they want 2x4s spaced 1" from the walls.

Is there any way to get by with 2x3s spaced 1/2" from the wall?

My basement is small, a middle unit townhouse, and if I can make the space 2-3 inches larger I would like to.

Or maybe 2-3 inches of lost space is not really worth it and it wouldn't be noticed?

You won't notice the space but you will notice the extra comfort

ditto. Do it right - a couple of inches aren't going to make a difference.
