Default Central Vac Doesn't Turn On/Off With Switch

We just installed a new central vac unit in our hourse. The original unit was about 30 years old, and it was just a simple remove and replace for the canister unit. The new unit is a Canavac system, and the hose has an on/off switch. The vacuum, however, turns on immediately once I plug the hose in, so the switch is pretty much useless except when using the power head.

Is there a way that I can wire the system so that it's controlled by the switch?

If it is turning on immediately that means whatever hose you are plugging into the inlet is shorting out the pins inside the inlet.

Look at the end of the hose, there will be a metal ring around it. Somewhere around that ring will be a split looking line a line of plastic. That split needs to go in between the 2 pins inside the inlet. If you plug the hose in on an angle then the metal shorts the 2 pins together and does not allow you to use the switch.

I'm not sure what model of inlet you have, but we traditionally install them so that the pins are at the top of the inlet.
