Default Heated Driveway

Hey

Does anybody know anything about heated driveways. Cost? How it works? is it actually worth it?

I haven't moved in yet but this latest snow storm is hurting my back already. LOL

Default The driveway

Hi there,

Try a snow blower... Not sure if Mattamy does heated driveways since I do not think that they offer it as an upgrade. I guess they can be great but might be expensive to install... Im not sure, but I think they run pipes underneath your driveway that heat the driveway with hot water. Anyone else have an idea as to how it works??

Thanks,

Peter

Upfront costs on heated driveways are pretty steep from what I can see $10-$15 per square foot of driveway that you want to remain clear. There are two kinds of systems that I have seen:

1. Boiler based - heat a liquid, probably glycol and circulate it in loops under the surface (water would freeze and rupture the pipes if something ever went wrong).

2. Electricity based - Low voltage wires are run under the surface and the resistance in the wire generates enough heat to warm up the surface (analogous to some of the roofing/eaves systems that you may have seen on some older houses).

Pretty exotic if you ask me... a guy just had one installed down the road from us and it must have cost a fortune!

I read a story the other day about someone who had this. All the snow melted and went onto the street in front of the house, froze and caused many an accident. His municipality told him to either remove the system or never turn it on again.

Big waste of energy... (or should I say HUGE waste of energy). Just think about it, you have to maintain non insulated asphalt to at least +1C when it's -40 outside...

I'd say if it hurts your back, just pay someone to remove the snow...

Smile Snow removal

Yesterday morning I woke up to a Mattamy worker shovelling snow off my front porch and walkway. He said they were doing all the homes in our subdivision and that later that day their trucks would be doing the driveways as well. I was amazed and thanked him profusely. Indeed, when we got home from work, our driveway and those all around us had been completely cleared and salted as well. WOW. Nice touch Mattamy!
