Default Is there any benefit to having half-brick?

Hi,

We are in the final stages of the structural changes for the new home,
and one of the things I was thinking about was half brick on the sides.

My current home has full brick on front and then half brick around ,
but it has a 8ft + spacing between the houses.

The new home has brick front and siding all the way around,
but the spacing is between houses is only 8 ft.

Is there a benefit to the half brick?

Thanks

None whatsoever. Resale?

I'm personally not a fan of half brick. My parents had tons of issues with flashing over half-brick, causing water damage in their home. So I'm in the all-brick or no-brick school of thought.

All brick is really nice for a custom home. For a track builder, you're so close to your neighbours that you will never even see the brick, so in the end, who really cares?

it's more expensive to repair when the water damage occurs. (brick)

Looks like we're in the minority. We chose Vinyl for our house, despite the fact that 90% of neighbourhood is brick front. We just thought the Vinyl looked nicer and made the house seem more welcoming.

Agreed.
Half brick looks cheap, serves no purpose and there is potential for leaks with the flashing.

Siding can be put on much much faster than brick. There is a definate cost savings to it.

Hello OttawaSolana!

Good to see another Solana owner in here! Where are you buying?

We just bought a Solana in Bridlewood and we went with siding on all sides - I heard a lot of stories about water damage with the half brick. Also, saves us a ton of money which we can use for the interior

When is your closing? Ours is in May 2010 and we just signed off on our structural. The only change we made was we continued the spiral stairs to the basement.

Cool, there seems to be quite a few Solana's in Bridlewood.
We are out in Riverside South, closing May 2010 as well (hopefully!),
and our biggest upgrade (so far) was the hardwood staircase.

Hope your build happens on time!
Thanks

We debated about the hardwood staircase as well - we didn't take it in the end - the circular stairs cost too much!

Have you been to the design centre yet? We were there on Sunday for the open house - the staff there (actually only one person) didn't seem too friendly - makes me nervous about the design centre appts now!
