Default Sensitive Smoke Alarm

Our smoke detector/alarm on our main floor is terribly sensitive.
It goes off at least once anytime we're cooking on the stove-top, and we cook A LOT.
We don't want to disconnect it as we realize that would be unsafe.
Is anyone aware of a way to lower the sensitivity?

Thanks a million for your replies, you'll be saving my ears!

Is the unit in the basement the same as the one one your main floor? You may want to consider switching the two units if you feel that one is overly sensitive. They're easy to move, you just have to give them a slight turn and unplug the connector at the back.
