There are other reasons. For example, to pipe audio all over the house, you can install ceiling speakers in all the rooms you want (say the kitchen, bedrooms, living room) and send all the wires to the basement, where you keep the amp and any distribution and switching equipment. Otherwise, you've got an amp in the kitchen, an amp in the bedroom, plus then you have to figure out how to wire your audio source into all those amps.
I helped my parents put together a set of speakers on the first floor, piped into a computer in the basement which would play MP3s if they wanted, plus it was connected to the phone line through a modem. It would announce the name or number of whoever called using the caller ID information. They loved that feature.
