Default Smoke Alarm detector makes intermittent *chirping* noise

Hello, we have a Kidde i12020CA smoke alarm detector on the main floor that has been intermittent *chirping* noise over the last couple of weeks. There is no rhyme or reason or any pattern as to when it makes noise, pretty much sporadically throughout the day.

This model does not have any backup battery so nothing to replace there, battery-wise, as far I know. I took it down off the ceiling and sprayed some compressed air to get rid of dust. Didn't help much. The replacement sticker says to replace it by 2017. Still 5 more years to go but the noise is certainly quite annoying.

Time for another unit? If so how much? Anything else I should check? Thanks.

The manual didn't say anything about it, so I recommend calling the manufacturer:

Have you checked the breaker for the alarm?
I would say that a chirping sound means that it's not getting power.

saw this in manual>> "SMOKE SENSING CHAMBER OPERATION: THIS ALARM WILL “CHIRP” IF
ABNORMAL OPERATION OF THE SMOKE-SENSING CHAMBER IS
DETECTED. THIS CHIRP WILL OCCUR APPROXIMATELY 20 SECONDS
AFTER THE RED LED FLASH. REPLACE THE ALARM IF THIS CONDITION
OCCURS."

How old is your house? Just remembered that a fam member had hers replaced because one type of SD is known to regularly have this defect. S&S Electric replaced them all through the builder.

waikiki, I checked the panel and everything seemed fine. I may add the alarm detector on the 2nd floor (different model) does NOT exhibit this behaviour.

g2k: Our house is only 5 years old. It was built in 2007. Like I said, the sticker on the smoke detector said it should be replaced in 2017 so we still have a few more years to go.

I will call the company on Tuesday and see what they have to say. I don't imagine a replacement unit is very costly is it?

I called Kidde CSR and was asked to run through a few checks (plugging the 2nd floor detector into the 1st unit and it didn't chirp)

In the end, I was told to wait for a replacement unit in 14-16 business days.

Default Same problem with Kidde i2020CA with 2017 date

We have the exact same Kidde Smoke Detector model and we are having the same problem. Also the same is that the label states it doesn't have to be changed until 2017. We have been receiving intermittent chirps over the past two days - between 3-6 per day or night. I assumed it was due to the battery, however realized there is no battery in this model.

We have three of these in our house and I think at this time only one is giving us a problem. I think I'll call Kidde to see what they think. I'm actually wondering if we should maybe replace all of them. I've searched the internet and it seems there are a few people having the same problem. Also, I'm thinking it would be better to have one with a battery backup.

our smoke alarm was doing the same thing, we'd be sleeping and it would just start chirping, we tried vacuuming it, did nothing

we called the builder and they told us they had a batch of bad smoke detectors, they replaced it the next day, problem gone
