Moving Companies

Some suggestions for hiring movine companies:
- Try to avoid the student/part time movers. they might have a little more energy, but their lack of experience and attention to detail will cost you. best to book during the week (which is often cheaper anyway).
- Have everything packed ahead of time - You can rent big plastic moving bins or buy boxes
- Get at least 3 written quotes (and check references!). Without a written quote, the guys have a habit of slowing down.
- If they offer to finish early for the quoted rate, well, do what you want but that always pisses me off. If they could have finished quicker, why should i pay more?
- Call your insurance company - make sure you're covered. The movers insurance covers you by weight - typically pennies per pound. there is basically nothing that you will get replacement value for with their insurance.
- Make sure your mover uses runners for the stairs and floors and blankets for the railings. That way they leave their shoes on (much faster), and don't damage your house.
- Have lots of water/gatorade on hand - you'll need it.
- Watch the weather. Avoid snow/rain. They say they can move cleanly without it, but it will always be messier.
- Pre-measure the fridge. It will help if you know you have to remove your fridge door to get it into the house.
- Sell all your old stuff before you move and buy all new stuff (delivered) for the new house.
