There are a number of utility companies to call before you move in. This way you can ensure that their services are there and in place on the day that you take occupancy.

Give each of them a call at least 3 weeks before your house closes.

Read through the details for each service on this page and use it as a checklist.

Services: Electricy and water

Oakville Hydro provides both electricity and water for your home. They bill monthly based on the market rates.

Services: Land line telephone (Bell Canada), cellular phone (Bell Mobility), satellite TV (Bell ExpressVu), and high speed internet (Sympatico)

Land lines start off at $55. This provides you with a telephone number and service up to the grey demarcation point on the side of your house. If they need to connect from the demarcation point to the builders lines, then there is an additional $79.

But there is an alternative! I too connect up demarcation points and phone jacks for a price much less than Bell. See my information here.

Satellite TV is available as an alternative to regular TV cable. A small dish is placed on the exterior of your house and satellite receivers are placed inside your house. You will need one receiver per TV that you wish to use with this service. Note: There may be a limit on the number of receivers you can have per dish.

Sympatico high speed internet uses your Bell phone line to deliver a high speed internet connection to your house. You can still make telephone calls at the same time.

Services: Natural gas for your furnace and water heater. Billing either at current market rates, or on equalized billing.
Connection charge: $35
Deposit: This depends on what plan you sign up for. There are equalized billing plans and pre-authorized payment plans. When you talk to the sales person they can explain what might be best for you. If your have a history with Union Gas they may waive the deposit charges, otherwise $250 will be on your first bill and credited back to your account after 1 year of service.

Services: Analogue cable TV, digital cable TV, high speed internet on cable, VOIP telephone service.
Connection Charge: Depends on which package your select

Cogeco is constantly changing the bundles they offer home owners. They offer a wide selection of services and they all fit through the one cable that runs into your house. Consult their website for details and then call one of their representatives on the phone to set up your account. (Disclosure, PHAND Corporation which hosts this website runs on Cogecos Commercial Cable Internet)

Services: Mail services, online bill payment.

If you need to get your mail forwarded from your previous address to your new address, you must contact Canada Post at least 3 weeks ahead of time.

The rate is $30 for the first 6 months.

You will need to update the address on your Drivers License and your Ontario Health Card.
